GRAHAM SMITH DESIGN

I am a creative, freelance graphic designer with over 35 years experience designing for print and digital, in London and Hertfordshire.

I have always had an obsession with design, photography and music. In 1981 I graduated from Camberwell College of Art and Design with first class Honours and my degree show included the design of the debut album cover for Spandau Ballet, ‘Journeys To Glory’. This was followed by other record sleeves including Sade’s debut album cover, ‘Diamond Life’.

BY THE '90s

I had become an award winning magazine art director. Art directing a broad selection of consumer magazines including Cosmopolitan. I diversified into contract titles and got short listed for ‘Designer of the Year’ in both the MDA and APA awards: In 2004 for art directing Toni&Guy magazine, and in 2007 for the design of the luxury hotel magazines Mal Life (Malmaison) and De Vere Deluxe. In 2009 I was short listed in the BSME Awards for ‘Art Director of the Year’ for Arise – Africa’s global style and culture magazine. The title also won ‘Launch of the Year’.

I CREATED A BOOK

‘We Can Be Heroes – Punks, Poseurs, Peacocks and People of a Particular Persuasion – London Clubland 1976-84’, which was published by Unbound in 2012. It was a labour of love and based on a collection of over 500 photographs that I had taken, in and around the London clubbing scene in the early 80s. It is the definitive tale of this influential and fascinating period of youth subculture. Though currently out of print, copies sell for hundreds of pounds on Amazon and eBay
